I'm sure they did not know

Yesterday I had to turn people away who wanted to enroll their first graders who were twin girls.. They had just moved here from Montana. I said we only have 8 days left of school I don't have to take you. No! I did not say it that way.....but I didn't have to take them! If we are under 10 days I don't, and we are! I feel bad for them because the dad said they did not get to finish the year.
I gave them enrollment packages and they are in my drawer ready to start as second graders in the fall.

the numbers tell how busy I have been

Yesterday I got to thinking....how many new students did we get this past school year?
So I did the math, crunched the numbers.....
Take the number of new students, total them, subtract the ALL students who come invited because they passed the test and are smart, subtract the students who have moved away and what do you get?

131 new students this school year!

And doing more math....

an increase of 20% in our numbers from the start in Aug to now, the end with only 8 days left!

Needed: A New Captain To Take Over Our Ship :(

Our school overlooks Utah Lake and we have the sharks as our mascot. With the vinyl lettering we have several sayings and decorations having to do with ships and lighthouses around the school.

Our Principal announced last week that he is retiring. It came as a surprise to us and it saddens us.
Here is part of the letter we sent home.
"With the opening of two new elementary schools in our city next year a number of our teachers will be transferring to the new schools and others will be re-assigned to different grade levels due to the change of enrollment numbers."
Then it lists the teachers leaving with a total of 10 of them. Then it lists teachers leaving for other reasons and there is 6 of them. We have our computer teacher retiring so the grand total leaving is 17.
The letter goes on to say:
"Finally, yesterday our principal announced his retirement effective on July 1, 2011. After 31 years of service to the children in the school district he leaves with wonderful memories that have been created over the years.
As many of you know he has been dealing with liver disease for many years. He is offically on the liver transplant list and begins his work up at the Transplant Center next week. Plans with be reviewed for a pending transplant procedure at some point in the future. Retirement will allow him to focus on his own health and will allow him to enjoy his family.
He will miss the sweet association of his staff, the patrons but most of all he will miss the children. He cherishes the memories created from working with literally tens of thousands of students over his long career as an edcuator."

So on Friday the teachers starting coming down with their classes and they have made goodbye cards for him. As he circles the students around him they show and give him their cards and he gives each of them them a high five and then he hugs their teacher. Each and every time he tears up and so do I!

I will certainly miss him. He is an excellant boss. As I work with him to constantly register new students, he always had time for them one by one showing them around, getting to know them and their parents and with his photographic memory never forgot a name. He would come out and lean against the counter and talk with us about family, church and his life. We got to know him pretty well. As we wonder who will replace him, I know noone can.

What a day

UVU held the GWC championships here on their brand new track.
After an hour and a half weather delay we were ready to watch Jake run the 200. He had qualified Friday and ran real well and all his years' work was ready to be shown.
He got down in blocks. I hid my eyes and turned my back. I said, "He won't run as well if I am here I make him nervous." I heard the pop of the starting gun and as quick as I could turn around I heard the pop of the gun going again. Oh no someone false started, please don't let it be Jake. I turned to look at Kim and he nodded his head. I covered my hand over my mouth and watched horror stricken as the judge walked and tapped Jake on his chest. He was out. I walked out of the track crying ready to throw up. As I passed him walking I mouthed it's ok to him. (What else does a mom say!)
As Kim and I were driving home we just hoped that UVU did not lose the track meet by a few points, the points Jake would have earned by placing in his race.
We came home and I was downstairs vacumning. I could hear Kim's voice excitily talking on his phone. I went upstairs and Jake had run a leg in the final race of the meet for someone who was hurt and had ran the 400 in 48 seconds his fastest time ever. Not only did UVU win the 4X400 relay but they won the meet by one point.

Below is the article in our newspaper.
There's a reason Utah Valley University's Skylar Burningham runs the anchor leg in the men's 4 X 400 meter race.

He may be a freshman but he's so cool under pressure he sweats ice cubes.

After three days of events, the Great West Conference track meet went to the final race, in fact, the final lap of the final event.

Win and the men's track team would complete a three-peat.

Lose and the Wolverines would be dethroned by South Dakota.

Burningham wouldn't be denied. He started the race about three meters behind South Dakota's Parker Erickson, but just over half way he took the lead.

Is there such a thing as a walk-off win in track?

Burningham opened up his lead to finish the race in first and help the UVU men's team hold off South Dakota and win the meet 207 to 206.

"For me it was all or nothing. I wanted to show that even though it's my first year that I could do something for the team," Burningham said. "Everyone came up to me and gave me a hug. It was pretty emotional. It was a great feeling."

After Burningham crossed the finish line, he was hugged by jubilant teammates and lifted into the air.

It only got better. Burningham looked up at the scoreboard and saw the time his team ran a time of 3:12.91. There's now a new school record to share with Drew Clarke, Jacob Brydson and Andrew Graham.

The win in the 4 X 400 capped off a series of clutch performances for UVU that helped the Wolverines win the conference title again.

"We knew we had some kids in good positions (heading into the final day) to maybe win it. They came out and competed really well. I wish the men wouldn't have given me a heart attack by waiting until the last race," said UVU coach Scott Houle. "We had some kids do some things I don't think even they thought they could do. They had a fun time representing their university and coming out with the championship."

oops I did it again (btw I hate Britney Spears)

Friday at school was so very busy. The principal is ending up a trip in China. Our vice principal is only with us on Tuesday and Thursdays. Our main secretary is sending out a missionary and marrying a daughter and took the day off.

We keep track of the students who come into the office and Friday there was 33 hurt ones. One was especially bad with a tooth knocked sideways. We called the mother and she could not come and the dad was out of town on business coming back later. So we took a picture of the boy's mouth and sent it to her with our phone. It was spaghetti for lunch and he was able to eat. He checked in with us twice so we knew he was ok.

Around 3 a man came in to check out his son and take him to the dentist in Orem. The appt was already made. We called him down to the office by what the dad said the name was and when he got there it was a 6th grader standing there instead of our 4th grader. I looked at him and at the dad and said what went wrong?????

Yep, two boys with the same name again this year!

To make it worse the 4th grader was an early bird so he leaves at 2 15 and he was home showing his mom his tooth and we had never called her!

To make it funny, (as if it could be) the mom we sent the photo picture to did not even recognize it was not her son's mouth.

Calling all Book Club Readers or Hosters

My mom recommended this book to me to read. Oh, it was so very good. She is hosting a book club at her house after they have read it and she is serving homemade bread!
I want everyone to read it.
